Golden Eagle Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Southern Miss duo of Jasmine Crowell and Quinci Hayward recorded 11 kills each, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles dropped a 3-1 match to Middle Tennessee on Sunday.

Mary Pursell picked up a match-high 16 digs while Elise Ames added eight kills to go with five total blocks.

Middle Tennessee out-hit and out-blocked the Eagles. The Blue Raiders had 49 kills on a .309 hitting clip, had 11.0 team blocks. Southern Miss finished the match with 46 kills on .113 hitting, 38 digs and 6.0 team blocks.

Middle Tennessee jumped out to an early lead and never let up. The Blue Raiders scored 12 of the first 21 points in taking a 12-9 lead. Southern Miss managed to get within two, 13-11, but the MTSU added four of five points for the 17-12 lead. The Blue Raiders continued to keep the pressure on and won the first set, 25-14.

After trading points through the first four points to start set two, Southern Miss then ran out to a 9-4 lead. Southern Miss scored seven of the next nine points in pushing the lead to 16-6, forcing MTSU to take a timeout. The Golden Eagles finished strong for the 25-17 win.

The two teams played evenly to start the third set, but Middle Tennessee used 6-1 run in taking a 13-9 lead. The Blue Raiders then outscored the Golden Eagles 12-5 for the 25-14 win.

Southern Miss took the early 6-3 lead. MTSU was able to keep the set close before using a 7-3 run to overtake the Golden Eagles 18-17. Southern Miss unable to regain the momentum and fell 25-22.

Monet Marshall led MTSU with 16 kills while Jacqueline Lux picked up 10 digs.

Southern Miss returns home to host Charlotte on Oct. 3 with a 7 p.m. start.
