Golden Eagle Volleyball Falls to UAB in Five

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped their fifth-straight match, falling at UAB 3-2 (16-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 8-15) in the conference opener Friday night.

Southern Miss falls to 9-7, 0-1 while UAB improved to 12-5, 1-0.

Elise Ames paced four players with 17 kills followed by Quinci Hayward and Lydia Bonner with 13 kills apiece and Stephany Purdue added 11 kills and 13 digs. Mary Pursell recorded 30 digs, Alex Pfefferle picked up 18 digs and Shelby Russell had 15 digs. Kristen Fleming handed out 50 assists.

The Golden Eagles finished with 63 kills on a .249 hitting clip, 85 digs and 6.0 team blocks while UAB tallied 76 kills on .302 hitting, eight aces, 80 digs and 6.0 team blocks.

The teams traded points to start the set before UAB used a 5-2 run to push its lead to 9-5. The Blazers continued to keep the pressure on the Eagles with timely kills and big blocks. UAB out-killed Southern Miss 15-7 while out hitting the Eagles .286 to .091 in taking the first set, 25-16.

Southern Miss ran out to a 12-6 lead early. The Golden Eagles was able to extend their lead to 19-13 before UAB began chipping away the lead using a 7-3 run to get within 22-20. Out of a Southern Miss timeout, UAB added another point for the Eagles closed out the set scoring three of the final five points for the 25-22 win.

UAB grabbed a7-3 lead and held on for a 25-22 win. UAB led 17-11 before Southern Miss battled back to cut the lead to 22-20, but UAB took advantage of a USM error and a pair of kills to close out the set.

The teams battled back and forth through the first 20 points. Southern Miss then outscored UAB 7-1 in taking a 17-11 lead. UAB made a final run late to cut the lead to 22-20. The Golden Eagles were able to hold on for the 25-22 win.

UAB opened the fifth set scoring nine of the first 11 points and never looked back on its way to a 15-8 win. The Blazers put down 11 kills on 17 attempts on a hitting clip of .647.

Sam Skinner led UAB with a match-high 20 kills followed by Sara Rishell with 18, Bethanie Thomas had 15, Kiriana Hirini had 12 and Ally Slaughter added 10. Rachel Fairbanks tallied 32 digs with Thomas had 12 and Slaughter and Skinner totaled 10 each.

Southern Miss returns home after playing its last nine matches on the road to host North Texas on Friday, Oct. 4, in the annual Dig Pink match. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
