Golden Eagle Volleyball Posts Win in Conference Opener Against Louisiana Tech
Southern Miss snaps two-match losing streak
RUSTON, La. - The Southern Miss (12-6, 1-0) volleyball team captured a 3-0 sweep of Louisiana Tech in posting a win in the Conference USA opener Monday night 25-16, 25-19, 25-20.
The Golden Eagles finished with 42 kills on .293 hitting, three aces, 44 digs and 7.0 team blocks. Tech tallied 35 kills on .176 hitting, 33 digs and 4.0 team blocks.
Southern Miss ran out to a 7-2 lead the Golden Eagles would never relinquish. LA Tech battled back to within one, 9-8 but the Southern Miss scored five of the next eight points to force the Techsters to take a timeout. Southern Miss pushed its lead to 18-12 before closing out the set using a 7-4 run for the 25-16 win.
Louisiana Tech (7-7, 0-1) took the initial lead before Southern Miss used a 10-3 run for the 10-4 lead. The Lady Techsters battled back to cut the lead to 16-15, but the Golden Eagles scored six of the next 10 points to hold onto a 22-19 lead. The Golden Eagles ended the set scoring the final three points for the 25-19 win.
The teams battled to a 4-4 tie before Southern Miss scored 12 of the next 18 points for the 16-10 lead. The Golden Eagles led by as many as eight points before Tech fought back to within 23-18. Southern Miss held on for the 25-20 win.
Rebecca Redgen led Tech with 10 kills and eight digs.
Southern Miss returns home to host Rice on Friday with first serve set for 7 p.m.
