OXFORD, Miss. - The Golden Eagle volleyball team had four players record double digit kills but it wasn't enough as Southern Miss dropped a five-setter to Louisiana on Saturday, 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 10-15) in the Rebel Classic.
Quinci Hayward led way with 17 kills while Elise Ames recorded 15, Jasmine Crowell and Stephany Purdue added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Mary Pursell recorded a match-high 21 digs while Purdue had 11 and Alex Pfefferle and Shelby Russell tallied 10 digs apiece. Kristen Fleming registered 38 assists. Ames was named to the all-tournament team.
Louisiana took the lead early but the Golden Eagles rallied to tie the set at 4-4. The teams traded the next 11 points before Louisiana scored three straight points for the 13-9 lead. From there, the Ragin' Cajuns got their offense on track and outscored the Eagles 12-7 for the remainder of the set for the 25-16 win.
The set started off evenly through the first 18 points. Southern Miss then tacked on five straight points for the 14-9 lead. After a Louisiana timeout, the Ragin' Cajun came back to cut the lead to 15-12. From there, Southern Miss was able to maintain its lead for the remainder of the set as the Eagles took the second set, 25-22.
The Golden Eagles took the third set 25-22 collecting 16 kills on .325 hitting clip. There were eight ties and four lead changes. Southern Miss was able to maintain a lead down the stretch in pulling out a 25-22 in.
The teams were locked into a heated battled for the onset. There were 13 ties and eight lead changes. With the score tied at 15-15, Louisiana grabbed the lead on three straight kills for the 18-15 lead and forcing the Eagles to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Southern Miss answered with a kill as the team began trading points. The Golden Eagles finally got back-to-back kills to cut the lead to 22-21 before Louisiana forced a fifth with a 25-22 win.
Southern Miss took a 2-0 lead to start the fifth set. Louisiana tied the set at 2-2 and from there; the two teams traded points for the next four possessions before Louisiana capitalized on an Eagle error and kill for the 6-4 lead. A Hayward kill and Crowell-Lydia Bonner block tied the set at 6-6. Louisiana then scored the next four points in taking a 10-6 lead. The Golden Eagles did not recover and the Ragin' Cajuns took the final set, 15-10.
Louisiana's Lavinia Tataran led all players with 21 kills while Tonice White and Sara Mossakowski added 18 and 14 kills, respectively. Andrea Hole had 63 assists and 12 digs. Caitlyn Auxillien also had 19 digs and Tataran and Mossakowski collected 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
Southern Miss continues its road travels as the Golden Eagles open Conference USA play at UAB on Friday, Sept. 27. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
