OXFORD, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped its second match of the day with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-15) loss to Ole Miss Saturday night in the final match of the Rebel Classic.
Southern Miss falls to 9-5 while Ole Miss improved to 8-3.
Ole Miss was led by Nakeyta Clair with 12 kills as Kristen Brashear paced the team with 10 digs.
The teams traded points to open the first set before the Eagles pushed ahead 7-5. Ole Miss eventually evened the set at 8-8. From there, the teams battled to a 16-16 tie before Ole Miss used a kill and an Eagle error for the 18-16 lead, prompting Southern Miss to burn a timeout. The Southern Miss offense began to struggle and the Rebels took advantage, outscoring 6-3 to close out the set for a 25-19 win.
Ole Miss scored six of the first eight points in taking the lead in the second stanza. The Rebels continued to build on their lead and led 11-5. Following a Southern Miss timeout, the Golden Eagles made an effort to cut into the lead, but the Rebel offense continued to put down timely kills in taking the second set, 25-19.
The teams started out evenly in the third set, battling to a 5-5 tie before Ole Miss used an 11-7 run for the 16-12 lead. After a Southern Miss timeout, the Rebels continued to build on their lead using a 5-2 run. Ole Miss then closed out the set and match, scoring four of the final five points for the 25-15 win.
Southern Miss concludes play at the Rebel Classic with a match against Louisiana on Saturday at 2 p.m.
