Volleyball Drops 3-0 Match to Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Georgia Tech (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) in the final match of the Georgia Tech Invitational.

Sophomore Stephany Purdue, who earned all-tournament honors, led Southern Miss with 12 kills on .219 hitting. Mary Pursell picked up 17 digs.

The Golden Eagles finished with 35 kills 45 digs and 6.0 blocks while Georgia Tech had 41 kills, 45 digs and 9.0 blocks.

Georgia Tech ran out to a 5-1 lead before Southern Miss battled back in cutting the lead to 9-8. The Yellow Jackets scored the next three points in taking a 12-8 lead. The teams continued to battle as the Golden Eagles kept the score close. Georgia Tech eventually grabbed a 20-16 lead then held on for the 25-20 win.

The teams battled back and forth until Georgia Tech took a 9-9 tie and turned it into a 16-11 lead. Southern Miss cut the lead to four, but Georgia Tech earned the 25-21 win.

Georgia Tech took an 11-7 lead. The Golden Eagles battled back to tie the set at 15-15, but Georgia Tech tacked on three-straight points for the 18-15 lead. Southern Miss was able to get within 21-18, but the Yellow Jackets scored for of the final five points for the 25-19 win.

Southern Miss begins Conference USA play at Louisiana Tech on Monday, Sept. 22. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
