ORLANDO, Fla. - Southern Miss had its 11-match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss to FIU in the Radisson-UCF Classic.
Olga Vergun and Jovana Bjelica tallied 13 kills each for FIU and Chanel Araujo recorded a match-high 18 digs.
The Panthers limited the Southern Miss offense to just 30 kills and a .076 attack percentage. FIU used a 9-2 run midway through the first set to win 25-15. In the second set, FIU jumped out to a 13-5 lead and never looked back as the Panthers defeated the Golden Eagles 25-16.
Both teams battled back-and-forth to start the third set. Southern Miss led by three, 17-14, before FIU outscored USM 8-2 to regain the lead for good.
Southern Miss concludes play Saturday against Florida A&M in a 12 p.m. match.
