LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Golden Eagle volleyball team posted a three-set sweep over ULM Saturday morning 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-18) in the opening match of the Big Daddy's Invitational.

Southern Miss improved to 8-2 while ULM fell to 2-9.

Quinci Hayward and Stephany Purdue led the way with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Hayward finished the match with a .407 hitting clip. Kristen Fleming handed out 37 assists on the morning and Mary Pursell collected a career-high 28 digs.

Southern Miss attacked at a .292 clip, while holding the Warhawks to .186. The Eagles posted a total of 44 kills, 51 digs and 4.0 total team blocks. ULM recorded 43 kills, 40 digs and 2.0 team blocks.

Hadley Swartz led the Warhawks with a match-high 17 kills while teammate Rachel Araya added 15 digs. Katie Harrington dished out 33 assists.

Southern Miss ran out to a 9-4 lead before ULM used a 5-0 run to tie the set at 9-9. The teams traded points for the next eight points before ULM managed to score three straight in taking a 16-13 lead. The Warhawks eventually push their lead to 20-16. From there, the Golden Eagles scored the next three points to cut the lead to 20-19. The teams battled down the stretch and had set point before Southern Miss closed out the set with a ULM serving error, a Jasmine Crowell kill and ULM attach error for the 26-24 win.

Southern Miss took the early 7-4 lead then used a strong service game to maintain a comfortable lead throughout the set. The Golden Eagles led by as many as eight points. The Warhawks did rally down the stretch to cut the Eagles' lead to 23-20, but Southern Miss ended the set on a pair of kills for the 25-21 win. The Golden Eagles hit .294 while ULM attacked .073.

After running out to a 9-4 lead, Southern Miss used timely kills and a strong defensive performance to hold off ULM, 25-18, in the final set. The Golden Eagles led 16-10 before ULM cut the lead to 18-15, forcing Southern Miss to take a timeout. USM then closed out the set on a 7-3 run. The Golden Eagles out-hit ULM, .353 to .167.

Southern Miss will play its final match in the Big Daddy's Invitational against UT-Pan American at 4:30.
