MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Southern Miss volleyball team concluded play in the ISTAP Collegiate Cup II with a 3-0 sweep of host Alabama State by the score of 27-25, 25-20, 25-23.
The Golden Eagles improved to 9-4 while Alabama State drops to 4-9.
Stephany Purdue led the attack with 15 kills on a .464 hitting clip followed by Quinci Hayward with 12 kills and Lydia Bonner added 10. Mary Pursell tallied 12 dig and Purdue added 11 digs for a double-double.
The first set featured 17 ties and seven lead changes as the teams battled throughout. Neither team was able to build any type of lead. The Golden Eagles ended the set with back-to-back kills by Purdue and Chanel Joyce for the 27-25 win.
Alabama State scored five of the first six points to start the second set. However, Southern Miss finally got its offense on track and battled by to take a one-point advantage using an 8-3 run. During the next stretch, the team battled back and forth until Southern Miss tacked on three consecutive points for a 20-16 lead. Three kills and a pair of aces aided the 25-20 win in closing out the set.
Southern Miss ran out to a 7-3 to start the third set. Alabama State tied the set at 11-11 using an 8-4 run. The teams battled for the next 12 points until the Black and Gold added back-to-back kills by Purdue and Hayward for a two-point advantage, 19-17. Out of an ASU timeout, the teams traded points for the remainder of the set as Southern Miss held on for the 25-23 win.
Chelsey Scott led Alabama State with 11 kills while Jamie Coleman picked up 13 digs.
Southern Miss now travels to Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match.
