Volleyball Eagles Falls to Towson in Three
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Towson in the second day of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup II by the scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-18.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 8-4 overall while Towson remained undefeated at 9-0.
Elise Ames and Lydia Bonner collected seven kills apiece while Stephany Purdue and Jasmine Crowell added six kills each. Mary Pursell came up with 11 digs. Southern Miss finished with 30 kills and31 digs and 4.0 team blocks.
The opening set started out with a pair of runs by both teams before Towson got its offense on track. With the set tied at 4-4, Towson reeled off the next five points in taking a 9-5 lead. Southern Miss was able to cut the lead to three, 11-8, before the Tigers outscored the Eagles 7-3 for an 18-11 lead. Towson closed out the set with a 7-6 run for the 25-18 win.
Southern Miss never got its offense going as Towson ran out to a 7-2 lead. Towson kept at least a five-point cushion most of the set before extending its lead to seven, 17-10, and forcing the Eagles into a second timeout. The Eagle offense could not get on track as Towson ended the set using an 8-4 run for a 25-14 win.
In the third set, Towson ran out to an 11-5 lead and never looked back. Southern Miss did battle back to cut the lead to three, 20-17, but Towson was able to hold on for the 25-18 win.
Haley Pa'akaula led the Tigers with 14 kills followed by Saitaua Iosia with 13.
Southern Miss concludes the tournament with a 3:30 p.m. matchup against host Alabama State.
