Volleyball Eagles Top Prairie View in Three
Team improves to 6-2.

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Southern Miss volleyball team opened play at the Big Daddy's Invitational with a 3-0 sweep of Prairie View (25-19, 25-21, 25-22).
The Golden Eagles improved to 6-2 while the Panthers dropped to 1-9.
Three Eagles tallied double figure kills led by Jasmine Crowell with 12 followed by Quinci Hayward with 11 and Elise Ames with 10 on 13 attempts and .769 hitting. Kristen Fleming handed out 40 assists while Ames and Hayward recorded four blocks apiece.
Southern Miss got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. Prairie View battled back using a 10-6 run to tie the set at 11-11. The Eagles then scored the next five of the next six points in pushing the lead to 16-12. Out of at Prairie View timeout, Southern Miss took advantage of several Panther errors while adding a pair of kills and aces for a 22-16 lead. Following another Prairie View timeout, the Golden Eagles ended the set on a Hayward kills and combo block by Ames and Fleming for the 25-19 win.
The teams battled back and forth to start the second stanza. The Panthers used a 7-3 run in taking a 13-9 lead and forcing the Eagles to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Southern Miss went on an 8-2 run to overtake the Panthers for a 17-14 lead. PVAM battled to tie the set at 21-21 before the Golden Eagles ended the set with a 4-0 run for the 25-21 win.
Southern Miss fell behind early to start the third set, but was able to regroup using a 7-1 run to take a 7-4 lead. After a timeout, Prairie View began chipping away at the Golden Eagle lead and closed to within 21-19 before the Eagles burned a timeout. After the Panthers cut the lead to 22-21, the Eagles then ended the set scoring three of the final four points for the 25-22 win.
Magda Zietek led Prairie View with 14 kills.
Southern Miss will face host McNeese State in the 7 p.m. match.
