Golden Eagle Volleyball Team Falls for the First Time, Loses 3-0 to Ole Miss
Golden Eagles' 10-match winning streak snapped
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team had its 10-match winning streak snapped when the Golden Eagles dropped their first match of the season 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-20) to Ole Miss in the Rebel Classic.
Kelsey Chambers recorded a team-best eight kills while Stephany Purdue added seven kills. Mary Pursell and Purdue had eight digs each. Sarah Bell finished with 26 assists. As a team, the Golden Eagles had 31 kills on .184 hitting, 27 digs and 6.0 team blocks.
Ole Miss scored seven of the first nine points to start the opening set. Southern Miss then used a 7-3 run to get within 10-9. Ole Miss scored eight of the next 10 points in pushing its lead to 18-11. Out of a Southern Miss timeout, Ole Miss added three more points in running the score to 21-12 before closing out the set on a 4-2 run for the 25-15 win.
The teams played evenly for the first 10 points to start the second set. Ole Miss managed to gain a little momentum in pushing the lead to 18-14. Following a Southern Miss timeout, the teams traded points but the Golden Eagles were not able to cut into the lead before falling 25-21 in the second set.
The teams battled back and forth to start the third set before the Golden Eagles tacked on three straight points for an 8-5 lead. The Golden Eagles held a three-point advantage through the TV timeout at 15-12. The Black and Gold pushed its lead to 18-14, but Ole Miss fought back using a pair of big blocks and a kill to cut the lead to 18-17. Out of the Southern Miss timeout, the teams traded points before Ole Miss gained the momentum and finished the set on an 8-2 run for the 25-20 win.
Nakeyeta Clair had a match-high 17 kills while Lexi Thompson added 10. Alexis Lee led the team with 11 digs. Ole Miss finished the match with 50 kills on a .343 hitting clip, 33 digs and 9.0 team blocks.
Southern Miss concludes play against Buffalo at 10 a.m. Saturday.
