MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Southern Miss volleyball dropped a three-set match to Alabama (25-23, 25-11, 25-15) in day one of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup 2 Tournament.
Southern Miss falls to 7-3 while Alabama improved to 6-2. The Golden Eagles finished with 30 kills, 31 digs and 5.0 team blocks while the Crimson Tide tallied 34 kills, eight aces, 23 digs and 9.0 team blocks.
Southern Miss took the early 4-1 lead before Alabama used a 5-2 run to tie the set at 6-6. Southern forged ahead 10-7, before Alabama put together another 5-2 run to tie the set once again at 12-12. The teams continued to battle for the next eight points with Alabama taking a 17-15 lead. The Tide added three more points for the 20-15 lead, forcing Southern Miss to take a timeout. Alabama then used a 4-3 run for set points. Southern Miss fought off five set points before falling 25-23.
The teams battled back and forth to start the second set before Alabama used an 8-1 run in taking an 11-5 lead. Southern Miss could not get its offense in gear as Alabama cruised to a 25-11 win.
The Crimson Tide scored nine of the first 15 points in taking a 9-6 lead. Alabama extended the lead to 15-7 before the Eagles used a timeout. Southern Miss cut the lead to 17-12, but Alabama regrouped and ended the set with a 7-3 run for the 25-15 win.
Kat Hutson and Krystal Rivers led Alabama with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Southern Miss is back in action at 7 p.m. against Southeast Missouri State.
