HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team kept its perfect record intact in Oxford, Miss., Friday afternoon, by winning its opening match of the Rebel Classic 26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 25-15 over Belmont. The match was played at the Gillom Sports Center at Ole Miss.
The Golden Eagles continued their best start in school history by improving to 10-0 with the victory, behind 12 kills from Stephany Purdue, while Rachel Johnson added eight kills and Elise Ames tallied seven.
The two teams split the first two games, before Southern Miss pulled away with two strong performances in the final two sets. The Golden Eagles hit a match-best .300 in game three on 11 kills and coasted to a final-game victory collecting seven kills and taking advantage of nine Belmont hitting errors.
Southern Miss concludes the opening day of the tournament by playing host Ole Miss at 5:30 p.m., before finishing the event Saturday with a 10 a.m., match against Buffalo.
