HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Golden Eagle volleyball team captured a three-set sweep over visiting Southeastern Louisiana (25-14, 25-20, 25-21) Tuesday night. The Golden Eagles improve to 5-2 while the Lady Lions fell to 2-6.

"I thought we played well in the first set, but we need to be more consistent in the second and third sets," Coach Amanda Berkley said. "I thought our middles played particularly well. They both had high hitting percentages. We played in spurts, but overall it was a team effort in the end. I thought Mary Pursell did a good job on defense."

Sophomore middle blocker Quinci Hayway led all players with 15 kills on .265 hitting as junior middle blocker Jasmine Crowell connected on eight of her 12 errorless swings to hit .667. Sophomore middle blocker Elise Ames pounded nine kills on .500 hitting.

Junior setter Kristen Fleming dished out 38 assists as Pursell led the defense with a match-high 18 digs and freshman Stephany Purdue picked up eight digs.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back to start the first set. Southern Miss used a .306 hitting percentage as the Eagles pounded out 15 kills in taking a 25-14 win.

The two teams battled though out the second set as neither team was able to gain any more than a three-point advantage in the first 27 points combined. The Golden Eagles finally took a 20-17 advantage after the Lions committed several attack errors. USM finished the set connecting on four kills for a 25-20 victory.

Southern Miss opened the third set winning seven of the first 10 points. SLU fought back to get within 9-8 before trading points. The Eagles used a 4-0 run for the 16-10 lead, forcing the Lions to take a timeout. Out of the time, Southern Miss was able to maintain the momentum in pushing its lead to 21-11. Southeastern did not go quietly as the Lions fought off six set points before Hayward ended the set with a kill for the 25-21 win.

Tiffany Thomas led SLU with 12 kills while Morgan Todd added 16 digs. Mikayla Shippy tallied 29 assists.

Southern Miss takes to the road for its third tournament of the season when the Golden Eagles travel to Lake Charles, La., for the Big Daddy's Invitational hosted by McNeese State, Sept. 13-14. Southern Miss will face Prairie View and McNeese on Friday and conclude with ULM and UT-Pan American on Saturday.
