NEW ORLEANS, La. - Junior Jasmine Crowell recorded 11 kills on .688 hitting in leading Southern Miss past New Orleans Tuesday night in three sets, 25-15, 25-15, 25-11.
Southern Miss (7-2) finished the match with 39 kills on a .382 hitting clip, had five aces, 33 digs and 7.0 team blocks. UNO had 25 kills on .037 hitting, 25 digs and 4.0 team blocks.
The teams battled to an 11-11 tie before Southern Miss used an 8-0 run, triggered by a tough serving game by Pursell, in taking a 19-11 lead and never looked back. The Golden Eagles ended the set on a 6-2 run for the 25-15 win.
UNO (4-3) took a quick 2-0 lead before the teams battled to a 4-4 tie. The teams continued to trade points for the next seven points. Then, Southern Miss outscored the Privateers 9-0 as Pursell turned in another outstanding service performance for the 19-9 lead. The Golden Eagles took the second set 25-15 using a .500 hitting clip.
Southern Miss led from start to finish in the third set. Five different Eagles accounted for 12 kills on .500 hitting in cruising to a 25-11 win.
Mikay Sellers-Wiebe and Taylor Berry tallied six kills each while Celeste Ramirez had nine digs.
Southern Miss will now travel to its third tournament of the season when the Golden Eagles participate in the ISTAP Cup 2 hosted by Alabama State this weekend, Sept. 12-13. The Golden Eagles open with Alabama at 1 p.m., Friday, followed by Southeast Missouri State at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Southern Miss will play Towson at 1:30 p.m., and conclude with Alabama State at 3:30 p.m.
