LINCOLN, Neb. - The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped its first match in the Nebraska Tournament to Georgia in three sets (25-12, 25-22, 25-17) and fell to 2-2 on the season.
Sophomore Quinci Hayward tallied 13 kills on .400 hitting while Kristen Fleming recorded a double-double with 21 assists and 12 digs.
Georgia (4-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set forcing the Eagles to take a timeout. USM got a block and kill in recording its first points of the set. Southern Miss could not get its offense in gear for the remainder of the set as the Bulldogs down the Golden Eagles 25-12.
The two teams battled though out the second set. Southern Miss may not have taken a lead but kept the score close. After trailing 20-15, the Golden Eagles used a 5-2 run to get within 22-20. Georgia held on for the 25-22 win. The Eagles recorded 17 kills in the set.
The third set featured seven ties and six lead changes before Georgia used a 9-1 run in pushing its lead to 17-10. The Golden Eagles got within five, 18-13, but the Bulldogs finished the set on a 7-4 run for the 25-17 win.
Brittany Northcutt led the Bulldogs with 11 kills followed by Lauren Teknipp and Stacey Smith with nine kills each.
Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday against Villanova at 3 p.m.
