Volleyball Eagles Fall to Louisiana 3-1

LAFAYETTE, La. - Junior Quinci Hayward recorded a team-high 14 kills and Jasmine Crowell posted 10 kills to go with five total blocks, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles fell to host Louisiana 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 15-25, 19-25) in the final match of the Sawyer Camillo Classic Friday night.

Kristen Fleming finished with a double-double for the Golden Eagles with 26 assists and 10 digs. Alex Pfefferle recorded a team-best 14 digs and Mary Pursell chipped in 11 digs.

Southern Miss finished with 50 kills on .206 hitting with 57 digs and 9.0 team blocks while Louisiana had 52 kills on .241 hitting, 12 aces, 53 digs and 9.0 team blocks.

Southern Miss rallied from a 6-1 deficit in the opening set, using a 9-3 run for a 10-10 tie. The two teams battled back and forth before ULL forged ahead 19-14 and forced the Golden Eagles into a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Ragin' Cajuns outscored USM 6-5 in taking the first set 25-19.

Southern Miss ran out to a 4-1 lead to start the second set, then, put its offense in high gear in taking the second set, 25-15. The Golden Eagles out-hit the Ragin' Cajuns .393 to .000 as well as using a tough serving game.

Louisiana rallied from a 3-1 deficit using a 6-3 run. The Ragin' Cajuns added six more points to run the lead to 13-8. Louisiana continued to take advantage of the momentum swing and cruised to a 25-15 win over the Eagles.

The Teams battled early in the fourth set before Louisiana used an 8-6 run in taking a 13-11 lead. Louisiana called a timeout and returned to score four of the next five points. The Golden Eagle offense could not get on track as Louisiana took the final set 25-19.

Chanelle Gardner and Stacey Reilly led Louisiana with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Caitlyn Auxilien tallied 18 digs and Andrea Hole finished with 46 assists.

Southern Miss will conclude play with matches against Southern and Nicholls State on Saturday.
