TROY, Ala. - The Southern Miss volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision at Troy (25-19, 27-25, 25-21) in falling to 3-1 on the season Monday afternoon.
Quinci Hayward led the way with 12 kills while Stephany Purdue and Jasmine Crowell added eight kills each. Purdue picked up 13 digs with Alex Pfefferle and Mary Pursell tallying 12 apiece. Kristen Fleming had 30 assists. Purdue also recorded three aces. Southern Miss put down 42 kills to Troy's 38.
Troy was led by Blair Winston with 12 kills as Ali Dowdall paced the team with 16 digs.
The teams traded points to open the first set before the Eagles pushed ahead 7-4. Troy eventually evened the set at 7-7. From there, Troy put together a 6-1 run to go ahead 13-8. Southern Miss was able to pull within two, 16-14, before the Trojans reeled off four-straight points in prompting Southern Miss to burn a timeout, trailing 20-14. The Southern Miss offense continued to struggle and the Trojans took advantage to close out the set for a 25-19 win.
The Golden Eagles popped out to a 3-0 lead to start the second only to see Troy tie the set a 3-3. The team battled for the next 12 points until Southern Miss recorded four consecutive points in taking a 13-9 lead. After a Troy timeout, the Trojans responded to tie the set at 13-13. The teams traded points for the next 18 points in battling to a 22-22 tie. Following a Southern Miss timeout, the Eagles put two points on the board in taking a 24-22 lead for set point. Troy took a timeout to regroup and returned to score three straight points for a 25-24 lead. After the Golden Eagles tied the set, Troy ended the set with back-to-back kills for the 27-25 win.
Troy took the momentum into the third set, getting off to a 6-1 lead. The Golden Eagles fought back using a 10-5 run to cut the lead to 12-11. After a Troy timeout, the teams battled for the next 10 points before Troy was able to a trio of points for a 20-16 lead. Southern Miss made a run and tied the set at 21-21, but Troy ended the set scoring the final four points for a 25-21 win.
Southern Miss travels to Lafayette, La., for the Sawyer Camillo Classic hosted by Louisiana on Sept. 5-6. Southern Miss will face Northwestern State and Louisiana on Friday at 12 and 7 p.m., then conclude on Saturday with Southern at 1 p.m. and Nicholls State a 3 p.m.
