Volleyball Wraps Up Competition at Bon Temps Invitational

LAFAYETTE, La. - In Golden Eagles' final match of the day, Lydia Bonner led all players with a match-high 10 kills. Kristen Fleming gathered her second double-double of the season with 32 assists and 13 digs as Southern Miss fell to host Louisiana-Lafayette in three.
The Ragin' Cajuns out-hit USM .318 to .196 as UL tallied 49 kills to 40 USM kills.
After trading points through the first six points, Southern took a brief lead on back-to-back kills by Bonner and Heidi Otto. UL quickly tied the set again before using a scoring five straight points in forcing USM to take a timeout at 11-7. Out of the timeout, the teams continued to battle. With UL leading, 20-16, USM used an 8-2 run to take a 23-22 lead, but Louisiana answered scoring the final three points to seal the win, 25-23.
After falling behind 2-0, UL went on a 12-7 run to gain the lead. From there, UL never looked back in defeating USM 25-16. The Ragin' Cajuns out-hit the Eagles, .464 to .133.
Southern Miss opened the third set scoring the first four points. The Eagles were able to maintain the lead for much of the set. Louisiana had to burn its second timeout as USM lead swelled to 16-13. After the timeout, Southern Miss pushed its lead to 20-15, but UL answered with a kill and ace and forcing the Eagles into a timeout. The momentum shifted and UL quickly cut the lead to 21-20 and forcing another timeout. Out of the timeout, UL tied the set before the teams battled back and forth for the final nine points. However, UL was able to get the final two with a Mandi Gavin kill and USM attack error to end the match.
No player from UL had double digit kills, but three players collected nine, Blair Claypoole, Gavin and Lavinia Tataran. Gavin also had 34 assists while Caitlyn Auxilien came up with 15 digs.
Southern Miss plays in its third tournament when the Golden Eagles travel to Arlington, Texas, for the Hilton UTA Classic, Sept. 7-8.
Bonner was named to the all-tournament team for her weekend performance.
