Cornelius Duncan defends 400 meter title

EL PASO, Texas - UTEP men and Rice women captures the 2008 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship titles after inclement weather delayed the start of the finals of the running events Saturday night at Kidd Field in El Paso, Texas.

The Miners racked up a championship-best 171 points, followed by Houston's 154.5 and Rice's 118.50. Defending champion Memphis placed fourth with 11 points and Tulsa finished fifth with 92 points. Southern Miss (86) and East Carolina (72) rounded out the men's standings.

The Owls repeated as outdoor champions with 175 points, out distancing runner-up and host UTEP (143.50) by 32.5 points. UCF continues to improve as the Knights finished third with 84.33 points. UCF was fifth in 2007 and ninth in 2006. UAB (70), SMU (64) and Memphis (58) placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Tulsa and Houston tied for seventh with 51.50 points each. Rounding out the women's finishes were Southern Miss (45), Tulane (39), Marshall (19.33) and East Carolina (17.83).

The Golden Eagles continued to have a strong day as Cornelius Duncan defended his 400m title in a time of 46.63, edging out UTEP's Anderson Mutegi who crossed in 46.81. East Carolina's Christopher Richar placed third in 47.48. Cordell Kinn came in sixth with a time of 49.05.

Myreon Sartin, a freshman, placed third after earning a 2.00m (6'6.75") mark on his next to last attempt. Teammate Leonard McLeggon placed seventh with a jump of 1.95m (6'4.75"), giving the Golden Eagles eight points.

Ricardo Page was third in the discus with a toss 49.83m (163'6").

Southern Miss scored a point when Ken Watson finished eighth in the triple jump with a jump of 14.67m (48'1.75").

The women's 4x100m relay team ran a time of 48.27, finishing eight, while the men's team came in third with a time of 41.75.

Ashley May got her second medal, placing third in the triple jump with a season-best jump of 13.38m (43'10.75")

McLeggon was sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.82 and JorDon Smith finished eighth with a time of 17.17.

Cheris Fletcher just missed medaling, placing fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 54.90.

Rascive Grant came in fifth in the men's 100 meters with a time of 10.79, while Chastity Riggien ran a time of 12.39, finishing eighth in the women's 100 meters.

In the men's 200 meters, Duncan finished fourth with a time of 21.44, while Grant was sixth with a time of 21.88.

In the men's 5,000m, Vincent Tanui finished fifth with a time of 14:47.88.

In the final two events of the championship, the women's team ran a time of 3:41.61 to finish sixth in the 4x400m relay and the men's team clocked a time of 3:17.44, finishing fifth.
