The Southern Miss outdoor track and field teams opened the outdoor season, competing in the Jaguar Premier hosted by South Alabama on Saturday.

Two Golden Eagles recorded regional qualifying marks, Cornelius Duncan in the 400 meters with a school and career-best time of 46.49 and Ahmed Abdelzaher in the high jump with a jump of 7'0.265". Both performers won their respective events.

Rascive Grant finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.93 with Jasper Faulk running at time of 11.21, finishing eight.

Cordell Kinn finished sixth with a time of 22.02. Marvin Pinnock placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 49.58. Rodney Gray finished fifth in the 110-hurdles with a time of 15.09 and teammate Mario King placed eighth with a time of 15.56.

Frederick Baldwin ran a time of 59.65 in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing sixth. The 4x100-meter relay team was clocked at 41.55, while the `B' team ran a time of 43.48.

Ricardo Page placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 144'6".

The women's team was highlighted by the competition in the 400 meters with Southern Miss finishing 1-2. Cheris Fletcher outran teammate Kirsten Richards to finish first with a time of 56.83, while Richards was clocked at 58.06. Jamaka Wall was fourth with a time of 59.81.

Ashley May had a busy day, finishing third in the 100 meters with a time of 12.42, while taking the top-place in the long jump with a mark of 17'9.75" and finishing second in the triple jump with a jump of 39'7.25".

Southern Miss placed five of the top eight performances in the triple jump. Aaliyah Shareef placed first with a jump of 39'8.50", Simona Costache was fourth with a jump of 38'0.75", Nyeisha Wright was fifth with a mark of 37'1" and Jessica Cheeks was seventh with a jump of 34'5.50".

Karla Thurmond finished first in the 200 meters, recording a time of 25.08, with Tori Wells running a time of 25.80 for a four-place finish and Terria Wheeler was seventh with a time of 26.53.

Jolisa Evans finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.48. Diamond Harris placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.73 and Kenika Weaver finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.37.

The 4x100-meter relay finished second with a time of 47.94 and the `B' relay finished third with a time of 48.12. The 4x400-meter relay team ran 3:52.16, placing second.

Suesanna Williams placed fourth in the shot with a throw of 39'10.75" and Rushae Collier was fifth with a throw of 37'3". Collier also finished seventh in the hammer with a toss of 114'7".

Both teams return to action next weekend, when they compete in their own Southern Miss Invitational, Mar. 10 at the Southern Miss Track and Field and Soccer Complex. The Saturday meet is preceded by the high school meet on Friday. Competition begins at 10:30 for both meets.
