The UTEP men and the Houston women both used strong finishes to secure the team titles at the 2006 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championship held at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the University of Houston campus. The Miners, one of three newcomers to the men's competition, scored 167 points including 34 in the final two events to snap a streak of three-straight indoor titles for the Houston men, who finished second with 153 points.
The Cougar women won their second straight C-USA indoor title and fourth in the last five years after sealing the victory with a 4x400-meter relay title. Houston was up 6.5 points on Rice entering the final race and clinched the victory by getting the baton around in 3:43.05. The Cougars finished with 141.50 points, while the Owls took second with 126 points.
Rice finished third in the men's standings with 108 points, East Carolina was fourth with 73, Memphis placed fifth with 73, Southern Miss took sixth with 44 and Tulsa rounded out the team scoring with 43.50. On the female side, UTEP was third with 72, Tulsa fourth with 66, Southern Miss fifth with 60, SMU sixth with 51, UCF seventh with 44, UAB eighth with 36, Memphis ninth with 28, East Carolina tenth with 20.50, Tulane was 11th with 10 points and Marshall scored eight points to finish 12th.
Mickael Hanany of UTEP was the meet's "High Point Scorer" in the men's competition thanks to three victories in the jumping categories totaling 30 points. His victories in the high jump, long jump and triple jump were also awarded the "Performance of the Meet" in a vote taken by the men's head coaches. Callie Wells earned the same honors in the women's competition scoring 20 points with her double in the mile and 3,000 meters.
UTEP men's head coach Bob Kitchens was named the C-USA Male Coach of the Year, while Houston's LeRoy Burrell won the C-USA Female Coach of the Year for the second straight year. Rice's Tyler Whitam, who won the pole vault, was named the C-USA Male Freshman of the Year, while UTEP's Jenny Holmroos, who won the 800 meters in a C-USA championship record time of 2:07.43 was named the Female Freshman of the Year.
Southern Miss' Raquel Washington blazed to victory in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time 8.30. Tanika Liburd finished third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.51 and Washington posted a time of 7.65 to finish eighth. Naomi Kiprotich finished fifth in the one-mile run with a time of 5:02.24.
In the women's high jump, Ashley Reyer finished eighth with a jump of 5'2.25". In the triple jump, Simona Costache finished second with a mark of 40'10.50", while Aaliyah Shareef finished fourth with a mark of 40'7.75".
Cornelius Duncan finished sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 48.77. Ron Robert finished fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 48'0" and Ken Watson was sixth with a jump of 47'8".
