Women's Tennis Continue Fall Season At Samford Invitational
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Women's tennis return to the courts Friday as they compete in the Samford Invitational.
Eight teams will be competing in this weekend's tournament, including two other Conference USA opponents, UAB and Middle Tennessee State. Samford will also host Memphis, Tulane and Wisconsin on their home courts.
The invitational will begin with doubles action on Friday at 8:30 a.m. where three Golden Eagles doubles team will take part. Lara Isis de Oliviera and Tjasa Jerse will make their doubles debut together in flight A against a pair from Memphis. The winner of that match will play immediately after and will face the winner of the UAB and Tulane match. Friday's match will be Jerse's first match of her junior season.
Tanit Lopez and Elena Roca will also make their debut together in the doubles B flight as they face a pair from the home team in Samford. Lopez's day will continue at 11 a.m. in single play in the B flight where she will play Laura Bente of Memphis. The freshman is still looking for her first win as a Golden Eagle. Her doubles partner Roca will also continue play at 11 a.m. against C-USA opponent Zirilli of MTSU.
Claudia Castella and Rikeetha Pereira, the final doubles pair and the only doubles pair that competed in the 2016-17 season for the Golden Eagles, will compete in the C flight against a player from both Wisconsin and UAB. Pereira makes her 2017 singles debut in flight A against Samford's Van Der Zwaan. Castella's singles match will be against Hrbalova of UAB. Castella is 1-0 against the Blazers having won by default last season in a 4-0 win for the Golden Eagles.
