Women's Tennis Set for Two More Home Matches
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women’s tennis team hosts Xavier (La.) Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and Northwestern State at 11 a.m. on Friday for the third and fourth straight home match of the season.
The Golden Eagles are 2-0 at home and had one match postponed due to rain.
Scouting Xavier (La.):
The Golden Nuggets began the season ranked at No. 10 in the NAIA preseason team rankings. Despite the high ranking, the Nuggets have struggles early on. A 0-4 record heading to Hattiesburg was dealt by a 7-0 sweep at South Alabama, a close 5-4 loss to Loyola (N.O.) and two losses at Louisiana-Lafayette.
Charlene Goreau, the French sophomore, earned the only point for the Nuggets in its last two matches in an easy 6-1, 6-0 win on court 2. Goreau will battle Rikeetha Pereira if court assignments stay as of recent matches.
Scouting Northwestern State:
The Lady Demons started the 2018 season 0-3 suffering losses from Louisiana-Lafayette, SMU and TCU at the UL-Lafayette Invitational. The last two matches against LA Tech and Grambling were postponed due to weather and moved to Feb. 14.
b>Golden Eagle Highlights
Four straight singles wins captured the first home win of the season at the hands of Alabama State. Claudia Castella won her first match of the season in an easy 6-2, 6-0 win on court 6, while Tjasa Jerse won her second singles match of the season on court 3 in straight set fashion.
The Golden Eagles went on to win five of six singles matches in straight sets against West Alabama. Jerse remained undefeated (3-0) this season after beating Georgina Salom 6-1, 6-0. All three of Jerse's wins have came on court 3.
Freshman Arina Amaning won her first singles match for Southern Miss on court 1 with a 6-2, 6-2 finish. Amaning moves to 1-2 on the season.
