Singles Play Wins First Home Match For Women's Tennis
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Four straight singles wins captured the Southern Miss women's tennis team's first home win of the season at the hands of Alabama State.
Doubles play came down to court 2 after courts 1 and 3 split the wins. Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse are now 2-0 on court 1 after a 6-3 win. Rikeetha Pereira and Elena Roca's loss on court 2 put the pressure on court 2 of Tanit Lopez Lopez and Lara Isis De Oliveir. The pair ultimately dropped the match, 6-4 and Southern Miss entered singles play down 1-0.
Claudia Castella won her first match of the season in an easy 6-2, 6-0 win on court 6. Castella's win tied the match at 1. Jerse won her second singles match of the season on court 3 in straight set fashion. With a 6-1, 6-4 win, Jerse gave the Golden Eagles the lead and there was no looking back.
Pereira had a close battle on court 2 but pulled away for the third point in a 6-2, 6-2 win. Lopez had the closest match up and forced a third set and clinched the match in a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 finish.
The Golden Eagles host West Alabama at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow for the final match of the weekend.
