Women's Tennis Team Falls to Houston 4-0 in League Tournament

Elja van Berlo concludes USM career with 22 singles' wins

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team fell 4-0 to No. 6 seed Houston in the first round of the Conference USA Tennis Championships at the Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center in Memphis.

The Golden Eagles concluded the season at 3-19 with the loss. Houston will advance to face No. 3 Tulane.

Houston started strong in the doubles when Giorgia Pozzan and Celia Fraser defeated Frances Askew and Kate Lanier 8-1 at the top spot. But the duo Elja van Berlo and Alex Bradley knocked off Liselot Keonen and Laura Ring 8-3 to even things up and put the ball in the No. 3 doubles court. Maja Kazimienruk and Charlotte Phillips clinched the doubles point over Moorea Williams and Mackenzie Oskin 8-3.

The Cougars was up quickly 2-0 as Pozzan defeated Alexus Coats 6-1, 6-3 to start the singles. Phillips battled Williams on court five and took the set 6-3, 6-1 to extend the 3-0 lead. Koenen clinched match point with a hard fought 6-3, 6-3 win over Oskin.
