NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 11 seeded Southern Miss women's tennis team ended its unlikely run in the Conference USA Championship but went down swinging before falling 4-0 to No. 3 seed North Texas Friday morning at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
The Golden Eagles concluded the season with a 12-13 record, having won five of their final six matches. Southern Miss had a plus-12 in the win column over last season.
North Texas got a pair of straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles in jumping out to a 2-0. Carolin Drescher lost to Kseniya Bardabush on court one 6-0, 6-1. Karina Gurgenyan dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match to Agustina Valenzuela at No. 4.
At No. 2, Mahitha Dadireddy stormed by from 6-2 loss in the first set to take a 6-1 win in the second set, but Anastasiya Shestakov regrouped for the 6-2 win in the third. Franziska Sprinkmeye clinched the match for the Mean Green at No. 6 where she defeated Kathrin Waidner 6-1, 6-4.
Lisa Noderer at No. 3 and Alex Kitchen at No. 5 were in the third and second sets, respectively, when the match was clinched by North Texas.
