Women's Tennis Takes Down NAIA No. 2 Ranked Xavier
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team posted a 6-3 victory over NAIA No. 2 ranked Xavier (NO) after taking four singles and two doubles wins.
Southern Miss (7-11) opened the match by posting a win at No. 1 doubles as the duo of Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen topped Kourtney Howell and Brion Flowers 8-2. Mahitha Dadireddy and Lisa Noderer downed Carmen Nelson and Brandi Nelson 8-3 on court 2 in taking a 2-0 lead. Xavier got on the scoreboard when Nour Abbes and Simone-Alyse Ewell defeated Karina Gurgenyan and Kathrin Waidner 8-5 at No. 3.
Xavier evened the score 2-2 as No. 4 ranked Abbes defeated Drescher 6-4, 6-3 on court one. Kitchen battled Nelson on court five before taking the match 7-5, 6-2. Xavier answered with a win on No. 6 to tie the score at 3-3 as Brown defeated Waidner 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Golden Eagles finished the match by posting three straight wins. Dadireddy defeated No. 26 ranked Howell 6-2, 7-5, followed by Noderer knocking off No. 36 ranked Flowers 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-1. Gurgenyan concluded the match, battling to a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) win over Ewell at No. 4.
Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday when the Golden travel to ULM.
