Women's Tennis Earn Big Road Win Against UL-Lafayette
LAFAYETTE, La. - Three singles wins from Elena Roca, Tjasa Jerse and Rikeetha Pereira completed the Southern Miss women's tennis comeback win on the road at UL-Lafayette on Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles took the early 1-0 lead after courts 1 and 2 picked up the doubles point. Arina Amaning and Jerse won their sixth doubles match on court 1 with a 6-2 finish. Lara Isis de Oliviera and Roca improve to 3-0 on court 2 in doubles action after yet another 6-2 win for Southern Miss.
The early lead was short lived after Lafayette took three straight singles wins on courts 3, 1, and 6. Lopez, Amaning and Castella dropped their singles matches in straight-set fashion.
The comeback began on court 5 when Roca remained unbeaten this season with a 6-4, 7-6 win. Roca is now 11-0 on the season with two wins on court 4, eight on court 5 and one on court 6.
Junior, Jerse, tied the match at 3 after defeating her Lafayette opponent 6-3, 7-6 (3). Jerse now has a double digit win season and improves to 10-2 and has won her last three matches on court 4.
Pereira battled to the end to win the match for Southern Miss. Pereira started the match with an easy 6-0 first set win, but fell 5-7 in the second. Pereira won the match 6-1 in the third set and gave the Golden Eagles its 11th win of the season. Tuesday's match is the first time Pereira went to three sets.
Southern Miss travels to Orlando, Fla. on Sunday for three matches. Golden Eagles face Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, March 11 at 11 a.m., NIU on the 13 and Butler to conclude the road trip on the 14.
