HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team bettered SIUE 5-2 Friday afternoon at the USM Tennis Courts.
The Golden Eagles, winners of their last two, improved to 4-8 overall.
Southern Miss took a quick 1-0 lead in the match, opening the doubles round with convincing wins at the top two positions. Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen defeated Monique Krutak and Sierra Halverson, 8-3 while Mahitha Dadireddy and Lisa Noderer topped Mia Frogner and Kali Donner, 8-3 on court 2. Karina Gurgenyan and Kathrin Waidner lost to Haley Ilcewicz and Lexi Aranda 8-4 at No. 3.
The Golden Eagles took four of the six singles matches in straight sets. Drescher claimed a 7-5, 6-2 win over Krutak at the top spot while Noderer downed Frogner 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Southern Miss added another point at No. 6 as Alex Kitchen made quick work of McKenzie Thomas 6-0, 6-2. Rounding the Eagles wins, Gurgenyan knocked off Ilcewicz at the five-spot 7-5, 6-0.
Waidner dropped her match to Donner 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4. Dadireddy won the first set 6-1 against Aranda, but dropped the final two sets 6-3, 6-4.
Southern Miss will be back in action on Mar. 10 when the Golden Eagles travel to Charleston Southern for a 1 p.m. (CT) match.
