Southern Miss drops 4-3 decision to Nicholls
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- It took the deciding set on Court No. 4 for Nicholls to come away with a 4-3 win over Southern Miss on Wednesday afternoon in women's tennis action. The Golden Eagles fell to 7-3 and 5-2 at home.
The team's 10-day hiatus was its longest of the season since Jan. 19-Feb. 2, and this was the first meeting with Nicholls since 2016.
Marina Vigil rallied past Tjasa Jerse for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory that clinched it for the Colonels. It was the first of the Golden Eagles' 10 matches this season to go to the final point.
Nicholls (5-2) also took the doubles point, defeating Tanit Lopez Lopez/Lara Isis De Oliveir and Claudia Castella/Rikeetha Pereira. For the latter duo, it was just their first loss after winning the first four of the season.
Pereira improved to 8-2 with her singles win on No. 2 (6-2, 7-5), and Elena Roca remained perfect in eight matches with a 6-1, 6-0 victory on No. 5. Castella blanked her opponent in a sweep for the second time this season.
Southern Miss will play at Southern on Saturday before hosting Mississippi Valley State on Sunday.
