Women's Tennis Drops Match to New Mexico State 5-2
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team fell 5-2 to New Mexico State in non-conference tennis action Friday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (2-6) started the day by dropping the doubles points. New Mexico State won two of the three doubles, but not without a fight. Kathrin Waidner and Karina Gurgenyan lost 8-1 to Denise Van Der Ben and Susana Alcaraz on court 2. Mahitha Dadireddy and Lisa Noderer battled Ashvarya Shrivastava and Annemieke Witte at No. 3 and held on for the 8-7 win. Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen lost a hard-fought battle with Brittany Collens and Ros-Polly Nguyen at No. 1 before finally falling 8-7.
In singles, Southern Miss scored their points at No. 2 and No. 6 when Drescher defeated Ros-Polly Nguyen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Kitchen dropped her first set in a tie-breaker 7-6, but bounced back to take the second set 6-0 and take the match in a 10-5 super tie-breaker over Brittany Collens.
Dadireddy fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 to Alcaraz. Waidner lost to Witte 6-1, 6-1 on court 5 while Gurgenyan lost to Shrivastava 6-0, 6-2 on court 4. Noderer won the first set against Van Der Ben 6-3, but dropped her final two sets 6-2, 6-1.
Southern Miss remains on the road and will play Abilene Christian at UTEP on Saturday and conclude with a match against UTEP on Sunday
