Southeastern Louisiana Edges Women's Tennis 4-3
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team fell 4-3 to visiting Southeastern Louisiana at the USM Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 2-5 while Southeastern Louisiana improved to 2-1.
The Lions won two of the three doubles to earn the point, but not without a fight. Freshmen Mahitha Dadireddy and Lisa Noderer defeated Adriana Castillo and Kaltenbacher 8-4 on court 3. SLU then the No. 2 doubles when Anna Bryukhova and Valya Rusakova downed Karina Gurgenyan and Kathrin Waidner 8-4. The No. 1 teams battled from start to finish as Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen dropped their match in a tie-breaker to Reginka Nychytailova and Renee Villerreal 8-7 (3).
Southeastern Louisiana took a 2-0 lead when Villarreal defeated Dadireddy 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1. The Golden Eagles won their first point on court 6 as Kitchen downed Avika Sagwal 6-1, 6-2. Waidner lost to Margaux Kaltenbacker at No. 5 by a score of 6-3, 7-5 (5).
Southern Miss tied the match at 3-3 when Drescher downed Nastya Tokareva 6-3, 6-4 at No.2, before Noderer outlasted Nychytailova 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3.
The match came down to the No. 4 singles. Gurgenyan battled hard but came up short, dropping a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 loss to Valya Rusakova.
The Golden Eagles are back in action when they travel to Las Cruces, N.M. for a match against New Mexico State on Feb. 21. Southern Miss will also play Abilene Christian on Feb. 22 in El Paso before concluding with a conference match against UTEP on Feb. 23.
