Women's Tennis Drop First Home Match of the Season
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team dropped a 2-0 lead after three singles matches went to the third set on Friday's 5-2 loss to Northwestern State.
The Golden Eagles won its fourth doubles point in four matches after Claudia Castella and Rikeetha Pereira and Tanit Lopez Lopez and Lara Isis De Oliveira battled their way to secure the doubles point. Castella and Pereira are now 2-0 as a pair on court 3 after today's 6-4 win. Lopez and Oliveira won just their second doubles match together of the like score and improve to 2-3 on the season.
Elena Roca began singles play with a sweep in the first set and finished her match to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead after a 6-0, 6-3 finish.
Pereira's loss on court 2 snapped a four-match win streak after falling 6-3, 6-1 to Polona Ivanova. Jerse's unbeaten start to the season also came to a close after a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Ela Iwaniuk.
The two singles wins on the front courts tied the match at 2 and the Lady Demon didn't look back.
The last three matches needed the third set to decide each match. Castella dropped her first singles match of the season despite winning the first set 6-4. Castella fell to Judit Castillo 6-4, 1-6, 3-6 on court 6 and gave the Lady Demons its first lead of the day.
Arina Amaning trailed early in the first set but came back to claim the first set on court 1 as she looked for her second win as a Golden Eagle. Amaning was forced to a tiebreaker in the second but lost and ultimately lost in the third set. The 6-3, 6-7, 2-6 clinched the match for Northwestern State.
Lopez battled to the end but lost on court 4 7-5, 1-6, 4-6.
The Golden Eagles close out its home stretch with two matches next week hosting Alcorn State on Tuesday at 10 a.m. and Grambling State on Thursday at 11 a.m.
