Women's Tennis Remain Perfect at Home
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Anastasia Cobanovic won her first singles match for the Southern Miss women's tennis team on Thursday to help the team beat Xavier (La.) 5-2.
The Golden Eagles remain undefeated at home and continue a four-match win streak into tomorrow morning's match against Northwestern State. Doubles play lasted an hour after both courts 1 and 2 were forced to a 7-point tie breaker.
Claudia Castella and Rikeetha Pereira won the first doubles match on court 3 with a 6-1 victory. Thursday's doubles match was the first doubles win for the two and Castella's first doubles match of the season. Pereira is now 1-3 in doubles play.
Lara Isis De Oliveira and Tanit Lopez Lopez dropped their third doubles match together on court 2 in a close match that ended in a 7-6 loss. Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse provided the winning doubles point and continue their undefeated run on court 1 improving to 3-0.
Cobanovic competed in and won her first ever singles match for the Golden Eagles in easy fashion with a 6-0, 6-0 win on court 6. Elena Roca was close behind with a 6-1, 6-0 win on court 5 to remain undefeated this year in singles play.
Jerse and Pereira continue to lead the team in four singles wins after Thursday's match. Jerse's win on court 3 clinched the match for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Nuggets earned its two points on courts 1 and 4 to bring the lead within 2 but Pereira closed the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win.
The Golden Eagles host Northwestern State tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. for its fourth straight home match.
