HOUSTON, Texas - The Southern Miss women's tennis fell 6-1 to Houston Friday afternoon at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts in Houston. The Cougars won the doubles point then won five singles to win matches for the win.
Houston (3-0) notched the first doubles win when Celia Fraser and Tina Rupert beat Lisa Noderer and Kathrin Waidner 6-1 at No. 3. Houston clinched the point at No. 2 as Mahitha Dadireddy and Karina Gurgenyan fell to Elena Kordolaimi and Despoina Vogasari 6-3. Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen battled Maria Cardenas and Rocio Martin to a 5-5 tie before the match was called.
Houston's Elena Kordolaimi scored the first singles point at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kathrin Waidner. Next to fall was Mahitha Dadireddy at No. 1 against Despoina Vogasari in a 6-2, 6-4 match. The match was clinched at the No. 4 spot when Tina Rupert downed Karina Gurgenyan, 6-2, 6-1. At No 6, Alex Kitchen fell to Rocio Martin 6-4, 6-2 before Lisa Noderer lost to Maria Cardenas at No. 3 6-2, 7-5. Scrappy freshman Carolin Drescher lost her first set 7-6 (5-0) and then took the second set 6-2 and went on for the win in the tiebreaker (13-11) for the Golden Eagles' lone point.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tomorrow in Houston.
