Women's Tennis Falls in Season-Opener to Mississippi State, 7-0

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team dropped its season-opener to in-state rival Mississippi State with a 7-0 decision.
In doubles, Mississippi State quickly picked up a 1-0 lead by taking wins on courts three and one. At No. 3, Macie Case and Emily Nettles were defeated, 8-0, by MS Lien Van Geel and Sarai Flores. The Bulldogs secured the point with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles Alexus Coats and Elanor Grossman fell to Petra Ferancova and Roseline Dion (MS). Play was then suspended on court 1, with State's Naomi Tran and Georgiana Patrasc (MS) with a 6-4 lead over Kate Lanier and Lauren May.
In singles action, Case lost to Dion 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. At No. 6, Flores downed Nettles 6-2, 6-0 and, at No. 1, Lanier lost to Patrasc, 6-0, 6-2.
On court 3, State's Van Geel topped Grossman, 6-2, 6-4 while Ferancova added the team's sixth point on court 4 with a 7-5, 6-0 win over May. State completed the sweep as Coats battled Tran on court 2, but fell 6-3, 6-4.
Southern Miss will host Houston C-USA for on Feb. 2 at the USM Tennis Courts.
