Women's Tennis Finishes 1-1 After Opening Weekend
FORT WORTH, Texas - A young Southern Miss women's tennis team earned its first win on the road after a double header at TCU on Friday.
The Golden Eagles began its 2018 spring season against No. 25 TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center Friday morning. The Horned Frogs took an early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point on courts 2 and 3.
The Horned Frogs secured the match with wins on courts 1, 2 and 4. Arina Amaning, the freshman late signee, competed in her first match for the black and gold on court 1 and pushed Bashota to a hard match but ultimately fell in straight sets.
Southern Miss returned to the courts at 4 p.m. to face Sun Belt opponent, Arkansas State. Amaning and Tjasa Jerse won their first doubles match together on court 1 in a 6-4 finish. Lopez and Lara Isis de Oliveir competed on court 2 and secured the doubles point after a 7-5 win.
Three returners won three singles matches to win the first match of 2018 for Southern Miss. Rikeetha Pereira won on court 2 after defeating Detlava 6-0,6-2. Jerse also won her match in straight-set fashion on court 3 picking up right where she left off last season in a 6-4, 6-0 win. Jerse finished last season 18-2. Senior Elena Roca went to three sets but won 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 for the third singles win.
The Golden Eagles featured three freshman opening weekend and coach Dominic Modise is proud of the performance his team gave.
"We had a good but tough day as a young team," Modise said. "We can only grow from today and build from what we experienced. Overall, I'm very proud of the Golden Eagles."
The Golden Eagles return home for nine straight home matches starting Saturday, Jan. 27 against Jackson State at 2 p.m. and LSU-Alexandria on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Golden Eagles beat Jackson State twice last season, 7-0.
