Softball Announces Addition to 2018 Roster
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss softball coach Wendy Hogue announced Friday the addition of Ole Miss transfer Sarah Van Schaik to the 2018 roster.
“Sarah is going to be a great addition to our team,” said head coach Wendy Hogue. “She has the ability to immediately fill numerous roles for us, offensively and defensively. To say that I’m excited about her joining the team is an understatement.”
Schaik, a 5-foot-8 Petal native, recorded 51 appearances with 33 starts splitting time between first base and designated player roles for the Rebels last spring. She had five multiple RBI games including the three-run homer at No. 5 Auburn to secure the win 10-4. As a freshman, Schaik recorded 31 starts between catcher and designated player positions; helped the squad to a 3-0 shutout victory over No. 9 Tennessee and was named to the SEC First Year Academic Honor Roll.
Prior to Ole Miss, Schaik played at Petal HS where she finished as a five year letterwinner and helped the Panthers to the 2012 and 2013 MHSSA 3A State Championship. She was the MHSAA 3A Player of the Year in 2012, a four time member of the All-State team, Gatorade Player of the Year nominee in 2015 and led the state in 2013 with 13 home runs and 63 RBI. Schaik was named the Pine Belt Player of the Year as a senior after hitting .554 on the season.
