Holifield Selected to C-USA All-Tournament Team
DENTON, Texas -- Southern Miss softball's Lauren Holifield was named to the 2016 Conference USA All-Tournament team for her performance in the C-USA Championships in Denton, Texas over the past week.
She becomes the first player in the Wendy Hogue Era to be named to a postseason all-tournament team and the 16th player in school history to be named to the C-USA All-Tournament team. Holifield is the first player since Taylor Beck (2013-14) in 2013 to be named to the league's All-Tournament team.
Holifield finished the tournament with a .250 batting average, going 3-for-12 with two home runs, including a grand slam. She scored two runs, while driving in a team-best five RBI. Holifield was walked four times, including an intentional walk for an on-base percentage of .438. The 2016 C-USA Newcomer of the Year posted a team-high slugging percentage of .750 on the week.
Holifield was joined on the Conference USA All-Tournament team by Krysta Tutsch (C -- Louisiana Tech), Delaney Rickey (Util -- Florida Atlantic), Kylee Hanson (P -- Florida Atlantic), Cara Goodwin (P -- UAB), Carnesha Thompson (INF -- Florida Atlantic), Caitlin Attfield (INF -- UAB), Taria Page (INF -- Louisiana Tech), Carnesha Thompson (OF -- Florida Atlantic), JoJo Fallen (OF -- UAB), and Morgan Turkoly (OF -- Louisiana Tech). The Tournament's Most Valuable Player was Florida Atlantic pitcher and C-USA Pitcher of the Year, Kylee Hanson.
The Black and Gold finished the season with a 30-28 overall record, including a 14-10 mark in Conference USA play. It was the most wins and most conference wins since the 2004 season. Southern Miss, picked to finish last in the preseason poll, tied for first place in the West Division and earned the No. 3 seed in the C-USA Championships.
