Block Named to C-USA All-Academic Team
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Conference USA announced its 2015 Softball All-Academic Team and Southern Miss' Danielle Block was named to the team, registering a perfect 4.0 grade point average in biological sciences in the honors college. The All-Academic Team features 13 student-athletes across nine different programs.
The unit is comprised of five seniors, five juniors and three sophomores, as selected by the league's sports information directors. The all-academic team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve on their team. In addition, the student-athlete must be at least a sophomore standing.
Block landed on the academic team the first year she was eligible. She was the only member of the academic team with a GPA higher than a 3.9.
The honor is the eighth in school history and Block becomes the sixth different player to receive the honor. Mackenzie Sher (2013, 2014) and Leslie LeJune (2011, 2012) were each two-time members of the team, while Kimberly Wagner (2013), Jill Mathis (2010) and Kristin Pilgrim (2009) each were named to the all-academic team once.
Block, a sophomore for Phoenix, Ariz., made 27 appearances on the season, including 13 starts in the circle. She led the team in earned run average, opponent batting average, win-loss percentage, wins, conference wins, games in relief and conference strikeouts.
The right-hander posted a two-hit shutout (W, 1-0) against No. 21 South Alabama for her biggest win of the season. The win was the first victory over a ranked opponent for the Golden Eagles since defeating No. 25 Florida State in Tallahassee on March 1, 2013 and the first win at home over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 25 LSU at home on March 16, 2011.
Block was a 2014 Finalist for Southern Miss Female Freshman of the Year. In addition, Block is a two-time Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medalist (3.75 GPA or higher - 2014, 2015) and C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll (3.30 GPA or higher - 2014, 2015) honoree.
