Wagner; Sher Named to C-USA Softball All-Academic Team

May 7, 2013

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior pitcher Kimberly Wagner and junior catcher Mackenzie Sher were named to the 2013 Conference USA 11-member All-Academic Team, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

Wagner and Sher become the fourth and fifth Golden Eagles selected to the team and continue a streak of four years that Southern Miss has been represented. It was also the first time in school history that the program had multiple members named to the All-Academic squad.

Former Golden Eagle Leslie LeJune was a two-time winner, earning the mark in 2012 and 2011 while Jill Mathis and Kristin Pilgrim were named to the team in 2010 and 2009, respectively.

"These are fantastic achievements for both Kimberly and Mackenzie," said co-head coach Kirsten Voak. "We preach to our team each and every day the importance of academics while also achieving on the field, and the coaching staff as a whole cannot think of two girls that embody that more than these two. It makes you incredibly proud as a coach when you have two young ladies recognized on the All-Academic team."

Wagner, a senior transfer from Western Kentucky and south Mississippi native, led the Golden Eagle pitching rotation in ERA for the better part of the season in her lone year in the Black and Gold. Her 60 strikeouts and six wins are team high-water marks. For her career, Wagner has tallied over 100 appearances and has 45 career victories.

Few college students, much less student-athletes, can carry a 4.0 GPA all the way through their college careers, but the D'Iberville, Miss., native has done just that while working towards her degree in Sociology with a minor in Mathematics.

Sher has been a rock behind the plate for the Golden Eagles this season and has enjoyed a break-out season on the diamond in her third year in the program and second under coaches Jon Malgradi and Kirsten Voak. She is the definition of a student-athlete, carrying a 3.8 cumulative GPA into her junior season while also starting in every game for Southern Miss including 39 starts at catcher.

Her nine homers are tied for fifth in the league and are alone more than one team's total while her 30 RBI are tied for ninth in the conference. This season, the junior has also thrown out 13 runners attempting to steal - the fifth-best mark in the league. Coming into the 2013, she had just nine combined walks. This season, she has become more patient at the plate and has drawn 23 walks.
