Softball Plays Nationally-Ranked Arizona State in Final Nonconference Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi softball team travels to Phoenix, Ariz. for a three-game nonconference series with nationally-ranked Arizona State. The Golden Eagles and the No. 5 Sun Devils play on single games on Friday (9:00 p.m. CT), Saturday (9:00 p.m. CT) and Sunday (2:00 p.m. CT).

Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 22-25 overall record, while Arizona State boasts a 39-7 mark. The Golden Eagles and Sun Devils have never met on the softball field. At the end of the weekend, Southern Miss will have played 10 games against teams currently ranked in the top 10 - No. 5 Arizona State (3x), No. 6 Florida State (3x), No. 7 Alabama (1x) and No. 10 Arizona (3x).

The trip to the Grand Canyon State marks the second time this season Southern miss has traveled to Arizona. The Golden Eagles opened the 2014 season with a three-game series with the Arizona Wildcats. Southern Miss' first and last nonconference road trips are to the state of Arizona.

Southern Miss has five players from the Grand Canyon State - the most players from any one state. Taylor Beck (Mesa), Danielle Block (Phoenix), Peyton Garner (Gilbert), Morgan McKeever (Tucson) and Kaitlin Wilson (Sierra Vista) each call Arizona home.

In addition, all three full-time coaches received degrees from Arizona State - Kirsten Voak (2002), Jon Malgradi (2005) and Grady Moorhead (2009).

Voak was a standout player on the Arizona State softball team from 1999-02. She earned All-American twice and was named All-Pac 10 three times. Voak later went on to coach at her alma mater, helping the Sun Devils to the 2008 National Championship and being named part of the 2008 National Coaching Staff of the Year.
