HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi softball team is set to host long-time Conference USA rival UAB in a three-game series at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. and will conclude with a single game on Sunday afternoon (1:00 p.m.).
Live stats and in-game tweets (@USMSoftball) will be available throughout the weekend.
In addition, the weekend series will also be Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend. The first 100 fans to Saturday's game will receive a free Southern Miss pink t-shirt. Also, the Pink Ribbon Fund will be at Saturday's game passing out information about their organization and ways to help with the fight against breast cancer.
The Golden Eagles enter the weekend with a 19-21 overall record and a 7-8 mark in league play. With 13 games remaining in the regular season, USM has won more games than any of the previous three seasons and tied for the most conference victories since 2010.
The Blazers head to Hattiesburg with a 23-18 overall record and a 9-5 clip in the conference. UAB advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals last season, capturing the school's first ever NCAA Regional Championship.
Southern Miss and UAB have met 46 times in school history, dating back to 2000, making it one of the Golden Eagles longest rivalries. The two teams have each won 23 games in the series. The Black and Gold are 14-7 against the Blazers in Hattiesburg.
With just three C-USA weekends remaining, the weekend series will have a significant impact on the Conference USA standings. Just eight teams advance to the Conference USA Championship in Boca Raton, Fla. (May 8-10) out of the 13 teams in the league that field softball teams. UAB enters the weekend tied for second place with North Texas, behind only Tulsa in the standings. After dropping a conference weekend on the road, Southern Miss is tied with tournament-host Florida Atlantic for the final spot in the tournament.
