BOCA RATON, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi softball team continues Conference USA play with a three-game weekend series against conference newcomer Florida Atlantic. The Golden Eagles and Owls open the series with a doubleheader starting at 5:00 p.m. (CT) on Saturday evening before concluding the series with a single game on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
Live stats and in-game tweets (@USMSoftball) will be available throughout the weekend. In addition, Florida Atlantic will be offering live video. Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 13-14 overall record and a 4-2 mark in league play. The Golden Eagles opened the Conference USA season with back-to-back series wins for the first time since 2006.
Golden Eagles played six games last week, finishing 5-1 the week with a .375 batting average with seven doubles, three triples and five home runs. For her efforts on the field, Meaghen Nelson was named Conference USA Player of the Week, becoming the first Golden Eagle to win since Jill Mathis in 2011.
The trip to the Sunshine State is the second trip to Florida for Southern Miss this season. The Golden Eagles played in Florida State's Renegade Classic in February. In addition, Southern Miss concludes the 2014 regular season with a Florida school, playing host to FIU. The Golden Eagles will also return to the Sunshine State for the Conference USA Tournament that will be hosted this season by Florida Atlantic.
Southern Miss has three players from the Sunshine State - Mikayla Davis (Orange Park), Selena Estrada (Panama City) and Arielle Pollock (Windermere).
Southern Miss and Florida Atlantic have never met on the softball field.
Scouting the Opposition:
Florida Atlantic enters the weekend with a 20-14 overall record and a 3-3 Conference USA mark. The Owls opened the 2014 C-USA campaign with a series victory at Marshall. FAU dropped the first game against the Herd before rallying to take the next two games. Florida Atlantic fell in a series 2-1 to UAB in Birmingham, Ala. to fall to even in league play. The Blazers won the first game, but the Owls tied the series with a win. In the rubber match, UAB prevailed to earn the series win.
The Owls enter the weekend on the heels of a 9-2 victory over Connecticut on Thursday night in Boca Raton.
