HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi softball team's Meaghen Nelson was named Player of the Week as announced by Conference USA. Nelson led the team with a .529 batting average, going 9-for-17 and helping Southern Miss to a 5-1 record on the week, including a C-USA series win against Middle Tennessee.
Nelson is the first player named Player of the Week this season for Southern Miss and the first Golden Eagle player since Jill Mathis on Feb. 21, 2011 to earn C-USA weekly honors.
Nelson, who earned her first career Player of the Week honor, reached base safely in all six games on the week, posting a team-best .579 on-base percentage. She recorded four extra-base hits on the week, including two doubles, a triple and a home run. The Cerritos, Calif. native had multiple hits in three games. Nelson scored five runs on the week and boasted a team-high 11 RBI on the week. Nelson had a .941 slugging percentage on the week with 16 total bases.
The infielder started the week 2-for-3 with two runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base against Alcorn State. In the second game of a doubleheader against the Lady Braves, Nelson went 2-for-3 with a run score, a home run, a double and five RBI in a five inning game. The home run against Alcorn State was Nelson's first collegiate home run. She drew a walk and scored a run in the final game against the Lady Braves.
Against Middle Tennessee, Nelson went 5-for-10 (.500), including a 3-for-3 performance in the series finale. The sophomore drove in the game-winning run in Sunday's rubber match to clinch the series for Southern Miss. Nelson notched the defensive play of the weekend as she fielded a ball at second and dove into first base to prevent a base hit and leave a runner stranded on third in the sixth inning of Sunday's game.
Southern Miss returns to action next weekend as it travels to Boca Raton, Fla. for a three-game conference series with Conference USA newcomer Florida Atlantic. Live stats and in-game tweets (@USMSoftball) will be available for each game.
