March 15, 2016

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team returns home for a four-game homestand beginning on Wednesday with a single game against South Alabama at the Softball Complex. First pitch between the Golden Eagles and Jaguars is slated for 6:00 p.m.

Live stats and in-game tweets (@SouthernMissSB) will be available. Drew Granger will provide play-by-play on the live video stream at southernmiss.com/allaccess.

Wednesday's game will be Dollar Night as all general admission tickets and hot dogs will be on sale for $1.

Southern Miss enters the week with a 14-13 record overall, while South Alabama is 10-10 on the season.

The Golden Eagles return home after a three-game Conference USA road series with Middle Tennessee. Lauren Holifield was named Conference USA Player of the Week on March 14 for her efforts on the diamond last week. The junior transfer helped the Golden Eagles to a 2-2 record, defeating Southeastern Louisiana (W, 8-2) and Middle Tennessee (W, 12-6) with a pair of one-run road losses to Middle Tennessee (L, 6-5; L, 3-2).

Holifield becomes the first Golden Eagle player this season to earn C-USA Player of the Week honors and the first player in the Wendy Hogue Era to earn the accolade. The honor marks the 25th time since Southern Miss joined Conference USA in 2000 that a Golden Eagle has been named Player of the Week. The Columbus, Miss. native is the first player since Mackenzie Sher (2011-14) earned the distinction on March 31, 2014 to be recognized by the conference for a weekly award.

Holifield played and started all four games for Southern Miss on the week at shortstop, reaching base safely in all four games, recording hits in three games with multiple hits in two games. She batted .385 on the week, going 5-for-13 with three home runs, a triple, four runs scored, and nine RBI. Holifield also drew a walk for an on-base percentage of .429, while slugging a team-best 1.231. She did not strikeout during the week.

The Golden Eagles and Jaguars met earlier this season in the Mardi Gras Classic in Mobile, Ala. The then ranked No. 23 South Alabama earned a 10-2 victory in six innings over Southern Miss.

Overall, South Alabama has a 10-4-1 (.700) advantage in the all-time series. The two teams are 2-2-1 (.500) all-time in Hattiesburg.

Last season, the two teams played a home-and-home series with each team winning at their respective facilities. Behind a complete-game two-hit performance by Danielle Block, the Golden Eagles upset the No. 21 Jaguars, 1-0, on April 22, 2015. It was the first victory over a ranked opponent since Southern Miss defeated No. 25 LSU, 5-0, on March 16, 2011.

Following the game with South Alabama, Southern Miss continues Conference USA play with a three-game home series with UAB. The Golden Eagles and Blazers will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19 beginning at 1:00 p.m. before concluding the series on Sunday with a single game slated for 1:00 p.m. The weekend will be Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend and all fans are encouraged to wear pink.
