HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Due to expected rainy weather on Saturday in Huntington, Southern Miss' Conference USA series with rival Marshall will start one hour earlier for Saturday's doubleheader.

First pitch is now slated for 11 a.m. CT with the second game to follow immediately after, weather permitting.

The Golden Eagles will take on a Marshall club that opened up the C-USA schedule in similar fashion, falling in three games at nationally-ranked Tulsa last weekend while the Golden Eagles were swept at home by Houston.

Golden Eagle Softballers Split Saturday Doubleheader with Marshall

Carissa Turang laced a two-out game-winning single in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Conference USA foe Marshall to avoid the sweep and improve their standings in the conference race at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.

Southern Miss (10-17, 0-3 C-USA) took an early lead in Sunday's game against the Cougars but the visitors scored four or more runs in at least one inning in all three games to pull away. Last season, the Golden Eagles dropped two games to Marshall (11-12, 0-3 C-USA), including a 12-inning marathon game, before picking up a win in Sunday's single game in Hattiesburg. Over the course of that series, the margin of victory was just over one run.

In the overall series, the Black and Gold hold a 13-9 advantage with a 6-3 mark in Huntington while the Herd have won the previous two series meetings.

At the plate, the Golden Eagles have shown themselves to be an opportunistic bunch, with individuals ranking in the top 10 in multiple categories across the conference including junior catcher Mackenzie Sher, whose seven roundtrippers this season are the most in C-USA and top 25 nationally.

Marshall has played just four home games so far this season and has yet to drop a game and will counter the Southern Miss bats with senior pitcher Andi Williamson. The former Tennessee transfer has thrown 126.1 of a possible 151 innings this season for Marshall and has all 11 victories for her team this season, going 11-11 at this point in the year.

Sunday's game is still set to begin at 11 a.m. CT from Dot Hicks Field.
