Softball Opens the Home Season in a Midweek Doubleheader with Alcorn State
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team opens the home season tomorrow, February 13th, against the Lady Braves of Alcorn State. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. and all fans in attendance will be given Mardi Gras beads as they enter.
Live stats, video, as well as in-game tweets (@SouthernMissSB) will be available. Fans can also tune into 1400 AM in the local Hattiesburg area.
Southern Miss enters the week 0-4 after a weekend in Baton Rouge at the Tiger Classic. This will be Alcorn State’s first game this season.
Freshman Tata Davis is on a three-game hitting streak and had multi-hit games against #8 LSU and Syracuse leaving her with a team high .417 batting average. Samantha Papp had a three hit game against Syracuse and is second on the team with a .308 batting average.

Southern Miss leads 15-1 and has won the last eleven at home.
The Golden Eagles picked up two wins against the Lady Braves, 7-6 and 10-8 behind a season high 18 hits on March 2, 2017. Jade Lewis got the win in the first game and Jillian Johnson improved to 4-1 after the second moving the team to an 11-7 record.
Scouting the Opponent
SWAC East Division champions, the Lady Braves, are coming off a 13-5 SWAC season, and were picked second in the East SWAC Division this year in the preseason poll. They return senior, Taylor Hughes, who was named the 2018 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year. In 2017 she was both the SWAC Player and Hitter of year with a .404 batting average. Along with Hughes, seniors Robin Harrison and Mariah Ortiz return, both were named Second Team All-Conference.
